How I Met Your Mother

Novac lets us know that...
How I Met Your Mother's episode "Atlantic City" includes a 27 reference. Marshall and Lily head to Atlantic City to elope. They go to a casino wedding chapel. The receptionist organizes the weddings and calls out Keno numbers. The second number she calls is 27.
There's documentation of that sighting here.

Also from Novac, this tidbit from Alex King's website:

%27 = in javascript strings

Thanks, Novac!

Cleaning out the email

Err...someone has been really bad at checking the 27 email. So, thanks for the sightings.

First, Valida sends these:
  • in the movie "Oh God!", George Burns (playing "God") is staying in room 2700 at the hotel
  • Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years
  • when me & my 2nd husband were dating, i saw the number 27 on one of his sports jerseys. he said he'd always used that number in sports. it had to be love! we were married on May 4 (54=2x27). the middle digits in our first daughter's SSN is "27". our 2nd daughter was born on Apr 27.
This one, I thought was spam at first, but I went ahead and clicked on the link anyway:

There's more, but I'll do a separate post. Thanks! :)

November 27th? Why?

Forget Friday the 13th - today is the day for real bad luck

THIS could be your unlucky day. Monday the 27th has, it seems, overtaken Friday the 13th as the date on which the more suspicious among us should avoid the likes of job interviews, weddings and driving tests.

The date has been identified as the most ill-starred on the calendar, with more mishaps recorded than at any other.

The trend emerged from a study of more than one million insurance claims, showing more people are likely to have accidents on Monday the 27th than on any other day. Domestic disasters, including burst water pipes and DIY problems, feature heavily on the lists.

Road accidents were also common on that date. The mishaps of unlucky British drivers included crashes in car parks, branches falling on cars and accidents caused by people trying to avoid animals.

Kevin Sinclair, the managing director of AA Insurance, which carried out the study, said: "Friday the 13th is associated with bad luck, but our records show you're statistically more likely to have an accident or break something on Monday the 27th."

Rand and I watched SLiTHER this weekend, and there was a 27 in the opening scene.

Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) and another cop are sitting in a parked car, clearly bored. The second cop (Wally?) is clocking a bird with the speed gun, and comments that a whipporwhill flies exactly 27 miles per hour.

“How America needs poets! God knows – she has enough profit takers, enough garage mechanics, enough journalists, enough teachers of only what has been taught, enough wage slaves. Without the poet – man of vision wherever he stands – the Soul of his people is a dead Soul. One must be insensible not to feel the chill creeping over ours.” -Frank Lloyd Wright

Arrested Development!

Oh yeah! My favorite TV show, in the KNOW! I didn't notice it at the time, but now that I made it through Season 3 DVD's I found a 27!!!

Michael goes into the Bluth office and finds one of his co-workers got hurt while partying (I think it was from their stocks jumping to "Risky" from a "Don't Buy" level...)

He walks over to the wipe off board that says..

"27 days since last employee injury"

And then erases the 27 and puts 1.

Straight Outta Lynwood

As all good 27 devotees know, 27 is Weird Al's favorite number. He usually works it in to his album covers, and his new one is no exception:

(the 27 is in the license plate number)

27 bleeps

The lovely and talented Carla Ulbrich
is selling a single of her song If I Had the Copyright (the F word Song). Here's the text description:

From the documentary (F**k) about the F word (this is the first song you hear in the movie). It's about how wealthy the singer would be if she had the copyright on that ever-popular word. The F word is used 27 times...

Countdown - 27 Days!

Well, it’s not exactly a big month or anything. I’m only changing jobs, having a birthday, and publishing my first novel. Big whoop. Not that I care or anything, but the date for the book launch party at Elliott Bay Books is June 5. Things will get rolling at 7 p.m. with drinks and appetizers then I’ll get up and babble drunkenly at about 7:45. Hey, it worked for Charles Bukowski. BE THERE! IT’S ONLY THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF MY LIFE! I mean, it’s just another day.

Oh my, three days with out a post! Where was I? Not with Jenn in Vegas at the Hard Rock, that's for sure. I've been busy. Doing:

Yardwork, laundry, cooking, cleaning, reading and re-reading the Buffalo Spree, chasing after the boy, finally cracking open The Da Vinci code (I am one of 27 people in the US who have not read it, right?), work, etc.

Also - last night - a first. I skipped the Apprentice and went to bed at 9:15pm. Don't worry, I have TiVo. I'll watch it tonight.

Thanks to The Smarmy Carny, who writes:

27 is my favorite number, so I always keep an eye out for it. I noticed one last night:

In the movie Everything Is Illuminated, the main character (Elijah Wood) flies back to the United States and walks out of Gate 27 at the airport.

It should be noted that binary for 27 is palindromic and pretty: 11011

And from the book...

"I stepped away from him, and he took another step closer, backing me into the twenty-seven foot conference table in the middle of the room."

In Wikipedia! :)

27 (twenty-seven) is the natural number following 26 and preceding 28. Twenty-seven is the smallest positive integer requiring four syllables to name in English, though it can be unambiguously defined in just two: "three cubed". It is the first composite number not divisible by any of its digits. It is the radix (base) of the septemvigesimal positional numeral system.

Twenty-seven is a perfect cube, being 33 = 3 × 3 × 3. 27 is 3↑↑2 (using Knuth's up-arrow notation). It is also a decagonal number. It is the magic result of a prime reciprocal magic square of the multiples of 1/7. It is a Smith number and a Harshad number. There are exactly 27 straight lines on a cubic surface. It is the twenty-eighth (and twenty-ninth) digit in π. (3.141592653589793238462643383279).

A 10,000-day-old person is 27 years old.

Twenty-seven is also:

Chapter 27

Chapter 27 (2007) - A film about Mark David Chapman in the days leading up to the infamous murder of Beatle John Lennon. "Chapter 27," is a reference to the 26 chapters in the J.D. Salinger coming-of-age novel "The Catcher in the Rye," which Chapman cited as his inspiration for the murder. Chapman has said he identified with the book's hero, who hated phonies, and gunned Lennon down because he thought him a hypocrite.
