Power of 27.
i did not get to see depeche mode in concert...boo hoo
Oh my, three days with out a post! Where was I? Not with Jenn in Vegas at the Hard Rock, that's for sure. I've been busy. Doing:
Yardwork, laundry, cooking, cleaning, reading and re-reading the Buffalo Spree, chasing after the boy, finally cracking open The Da Vinci code (I am one of 27 people in the US who have not read it, right?), work, etc.
Also - last night - a first. I skipped the Apprentice and went to bed at 9:15pm. Don't worry, I have TiVo. I'll watch it tonight.

The SIMPSONS 27 :)
“Girls Just Wanna Have Sums”
Lisa dresses up as a boy to prove the best math student is really a...girl. In one of her dream sequences all these math symbols and signs are floating around along with one number 27. Which I immediately pointed out to Mark, and then of course the 27 spoke to her...it said .
"27."

Submitted for our pleasure
27 is my favorite number, so I always keep an eye out for it. I noticed one last night:
In the movie Everything Is Illuminated, the main character (Elijah Wood) flies back to the United States and walks out of Gate 27 at the airport.
It should be noted that binary for 27 is palindromic and pretty: 11011
Keep 'em coming!

#27
27 (twenty-seven) is the natural number following 26 and preceding 28. Twenty-seven is the smallest positive integer requiring four syllables to name in English, though it can be unambiguously defined in just two: "three cubed". It is the first composite number not divisible by any of its digits. It is the radix (base) of the septemvigesimal positional numeral system.
Twenty-seven is a perfect cube, being 33 = 3 × 3 × 3. 27 is 3↑↑2 (using Knuth's up-arrow notation). It is also a decagonal number. It is the magic result of a prime reciprocal magic square of the multiples of 1/7. It is a Smith number and a Harshad number. There are exactly 27 straight lines on a cubic surface. It is the twenty-eighth (and twenty-ninth) digit in Ï€. (3.141592653589793238462643383279).
A 10,000-day-old person is 27 years old.
Twenty-seven is also:
- The atomic number of cobalt.
- The total number of books in the New Testament of the Holy Bible.
- The number of letters in the Spanish alphabet
- The current number of Amendments to the United States Constitution.
- The age in years at which musicians Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kristen Pfaff, Chris Bell, Jason Thirsk, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain died. Occasionally, this is termed the ideal age to die, and in fact the concept is so famous that it has inspired a brand of clothing, Dead.At.27.
- The code for international direct-dialed phone calls to South Africa.
- "Weird Al" Yankovic hides the number 27 somewhere in many of his songs and videos.
- With the number 37, a key number in comedian Charles Fleischer's concept of moleeds.
- I-27 is the designation for a US interstate highway in Texas.
- US 27 is the designation of a highway from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Miami, Florida.
- The number of completed, numbered piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- Historical years: 27 A.D., 27 B.C., or 1927
- The name of the second track on, and first single released from, the Biffy Clyro album Blackened Sky
- The name of a popular cigarette, Marlboro Blend No. 27
- The homepage of Jonathan J. Harris number27.org

Chapter 27 (2007) - A film about Mark David Chapman in the days leading up to the infamous murder of Beatle John Lennon. "Chapter 27," is a reference to the 26 chapters in the J.D. Salinger coming-of-age novel "The Catcher in the Rye," which Chapman cited as his inspiration for the murder. Chapman has said he identified with the book's hero, who hated phonies, and gunned Lennon down because he thought him a hypocrite.

"Poem #27 or "Its design is like a forest & a forest is no design at all"
Disclosure: I am not really a fan of poetry. I dabble in it here and there, and sometimes find a poet I really like. Most times, I just don't get it. Or care too. Spencer's collection, for the most part, is quite over my head. I don't get the style, but again, I am not a poetry person. I do know that generally speaking, while reading this collection... my heart felt heavy and I wanted to untangle his sadness, knowing it would be impossible to do so. If that makes any sense at all...I DID however realize that Mr. Short is in the *know* about the number 27.

27s galore
Thanks to Eden, for bringing this to my attention:
Oh please. All hell's supposed to break loose when you're 27. When I called Tom Robbins last week to tell him the fascinating fact that sperm leaves the human male at just over 27 miles an hour, Tom replied, “That's good, because women go through a second adolescence at 27.” Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Jim Morrison all died at 27. (The number 27 is also powerfully romantic; see the last question.)
And there's more!
In fact, I'm going to deliver to you 27 incredibly handsome possibilities. Yes! You'll be driving up to Vermont in no time at all. Orioles First Baseman Rebuffs Press Corps With Spirited Denials
Rafael Palmeiro, the first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles who was suspended by Major League Baseball after testing positive for steroids, stunned the worlds of baseball and politics alike today by retiring from his sport to become the new White House press spokesman. Most baseball insiders had expected Mr. Palmeiro to return to his position at first base upon finishing his suspension, making his decision to replace Scott McClellan as White House spokesman all the more surprising. But the plain-spoken Palmeiro impressed White House staffers in his first press briefing today, jutting his index finger in the faces of reporters and offering no fewer than twenty-seven spirited denials in answer to their questions.

From the Opinion Journal :)
Watching the Watchers
Australian blogger Tim Blair calls our attention to an amusing kerfuffle Down Under that involves this Web site. It began when Janet Albrechtsen, a columnist for the Australian newspaper, gave a plug to the work of Arthur Chrenkoff:
Good news [about Iraq] is not hard to come by. But when something positive does happen, it either gets filtered through the anti-war eyes of the media or is all but ignored. And that is what the terrorists are counting on. They must detest The Wall Street Journal. Each fortnight the paper's website (www.wsj.com) includes a round-up of good news from Iraq. It makes for refreshing reading, if only to even up the Iraq ledger.
Last week came the latest instalment, all 27 pages of it.
27 pages of good news, from the prestigious Wall Street Journal? We wanted to know more . . . but couldn't find it on their web site.

YOU SAY TOMATO
Issue of 2005-03-21
Red Mascara doesn’t much care whether the tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, and if he were a less patient man he might have become bitter over the expedited treatment that the tomato seems to be receiving in the statehouse. For forty-four years, Mascara, who is eighty-two, and whose birth name is Joseph Mascari, has been lobbying for the recognition of an official Garden State song; New Jersey is the only state that doesn’t have one. Specifically, Mascara is campaigning on behalf of his own composition, “I’m from New Jersey,” which he wrote in 1960 and then recorded in twenty-seven different versions—symphonic, marching band, keyboard. Every legislative session, without fail, Mascara appears in Trenton to plead his case, passing out gumdrops around the statehouse—to no avail.

Lesson 27
Lesson 27-Earlier Losses May Surface
You may have unresolved losses from the past, previous relationships, rejections, disappointments, hurts, and that wellspring of loss- childhood.,
A contemporary loss can release a prior unhealed loss.
You may feel that your responding unreasonably to a loss, in fact you may be healing past losses too.
Give yourself permission to mend it all.
Let it heal.
Make peace with your past.

While council is discussing giving out money, there is a possibility that the city will have to layoff most city employees for the last two weeks of the year due to the city being out of money. Council also can't count very well either because they didn't figure in the last payroll of the year into the budget. Comment-able 27
In honour of the 30th anniversary of D&D, I did nothing. I didn't do anything for the 27th
anniversary, which is a more interesting number, so I thought why bother? Besides, every soul-crushing moment I spend with a computer instead of a telescope is a testament to the power of D&D.

"...this was an important moment in my life and I wanted to see every bit of it. Twenty-Seven million dollars was nothing to shrug off, and it was going to be mine. I could sense it. The ticket felt right in my hand, the numbers seemed to dance on the paper, telling me that they were winners."

Naked (economics) 27
Just thought I'd share a paragraph out of Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan:
From 1947 to 1975, productivity grew at an annual rate of 2.7 percent
a year. From 1975 until the mid-1990s, for reasons that are still not
fully understood, productivity growth slowed to 1.4 percent a year.
That may seem like a trivial difference; in fact, it has a profound
effect on our standard of living. One handy trick in finance and
economics is the rule of 72; divide 72 by a rate of growth (or a rate
of interest) and the answer will tell you roughly how long it will
take for a growing quanitity to double (e.g. the principal in a bank
account paying 10 percent interest will double in seven years). When
productivity grows at 2.7 percent a year, our standard of living
doubles every 27 years. At 1.4 percent, it doubles every 51 years.
